How we selected products

Selections reflect the use cases explained in this guide, documented specifications, compatibility and purchasing considerations for Canada. This is a limited research shortlist, not an exhaustive market survey or a hands-on ranking. Prices, customer-review scores and affiliate commissions did not determine these selections.

Buying advice

Start with one job for each camera

Write down the question each location should answer: who arrived at the front door, whether the garage closed, or what happened overnight. A wide view and an identification view are different jobs. Prioritize the areas that matter, then check the actual sightline, power route and access for maintenance. More cameras are not automatically a better plan.

IP and wireless are not opposing choices

An IP camera uses a network; that connection can be wired Ethernet or Wi-Fi. Wireless networking also does not mean battery power. Our shortlist includes a plug-in indoor camera, a plug-in outdoor camera, a solar-assisted model and a PoE recorder kit. Choose the power and recording arrangement first, rather than shopping for the word wireless.

Decide how much of the timeline you need

If you need to investigate events before and after a notification, ask about continuous recording and playback. If short event clips meet your purpose, a battery model may be practical. Test how quickly you can find yesterday’s event, export it and share it with an authorized household member. Include storage hardware and any optional subscription in your ownership budget.

Check integration before combining brands

Do not assume a camera will work with an existing recorder because both are network products. TP-Link documents model-specific RTSP/ONVIF support and recording combinations; battery cameras have different restrictions. Confirm the exact camera revision, recorder compatibility and required features together. Avoid opening camera access directly to the public internet.

Make alerts manageable

Begin with the entrance or path that matters, not the entire frame. Review ordinary activity for several days and adjust your notification preferences. Ask who receives alerts, who can view recordings and who maintains updates. Keep cameras out of private indoor spaces and avoid pointing unnecessarily into adjacent property.

How to use this shortlist

These are starting points for four installation approaches, not a ranking based on hands-on tests. Check each product profile for environmental limits and variant details.
