Start with the instructions for your car

Performance cars can have model-specific battery, tire and long-term-storage requirements. Read the owner’s manual and arrange needed maintenance before storage. A generic checklist should help organise those instructions, not replace them or override the fitted components’ limits.

Choose and prepare the space

Use a suitable secure location and clean and dry the vehicle before covering it. Inspect for leaks or existing damage so you have a record for spring. Select any cover for the actual storage environment rather than assuming every material works equally well indoors and outside.

Make a battery plan

Identify the battery chemistry and approved charging points. If a maintainer is appropriate, choose a compatible model and mode, route the cable safely and follow the manual’s inspection guidance. Never charge a frozen or damaged battery, and do not turn a repair or force mode into an unattended storage routine.

Look after the tires

Inspect tires and use the vehicle and tire manufacturers’ inflation guidance; the sidewall maximum is not a universal storage target. If choosing support pads, verify fit and load suitability and follow the loading instructions. Pads do not eliminate the need to inspect condition or pressure.

Keep a return-to-service list

Record anything disconnected or changed for storage. Before driving again, remove covers and charging equipment, inspect for leaks and damage, check tire pressures and arrange any needed service.
